Heads Up on Texas Vehicle Registration Renewal
Seems our wonderful State Gov't is now sending out vehicle registration renewal forms over a month before the month of expiration. If you send it back in quickly, they issue you a new annual registration sticker in which you lose one month. So for example, if I mail in my March 2012 renewal, I will receive a February 2013 expiration date.

It's also being tied into homestead exemptions in some counties, so if you're not up to date on your tags, you could lose your exemption if yours is due.
At least at one point they were crediting you for that month lost, though I'm not sure if that is still the case. I know that was the case in 2011 because I asked specifically and was shown the adjustment while I was updating my registration.
However, inspections do NOT work that way and you have a 30 day grace period (ie - if it says 2/2012, then you have until the end of March before you can get a ticket for it). You can save a month each year if you time it right.
I've noticed one thing different this year, they are asking what color vehicles are, at least locally
Anonymous you are wrong about the 30 day grace period. The state gives you a 5 day grace period on both your registration and inspection. You can confirm by checking out the TX DPS website.
If you want some extra time, then you could try renewing during those 5 days to see if that would give you an extra month.
I imagine the state sends out those notices about a month in advance to make sure they get to their destination with enough time for you to register your vehicle in a timely manner.
I imagine, the same people that complain that they got them more than a month in advance would also be the ones to complain when they did not get one and try to use that as an excuse for why they did not renew in time. You are expected to know when your registration and inspection expire. Besides, you walk right by them everyday as you get into your car.
My experience has been that most preppers are intelligent people and plan their lives accordingly. To not use common sense when dealing with the state, would not be characteristic of a good prepper.
Your example did not happen to me. My sticker was expiring in March 2012, and I received the notification in late Jan, maybe first couple days in Feb. Received the new sticker on Feb 8, and it was for march 2013.
this is not true. if your tag runs out Dec 31 2011 and you renew in Nov 2011 the new exp date is Dec 31 2012. what else is not true?
Actually, you only have 5 working days on registration and inspection. For example if your inspection sticker expired 2/12 you have until march 7th before a citation was possible. Remember 5 working days not 5 days.
Great thoughts you got there, believe I may possibly try just some of it throughout my daily life.

The top poster is absolutely right! Texas is now sneaking in a back door tax by cutting back our car registrations to 11 months. When I got my mew window tag I replaced a 6 14 with a 5 14. The form even said that my previous June tag expired on May 31, not the end of the month like it's always been before. No more grace period for Tx. Perry had to sign off for this so I hold him directly responsible.
My tags went out in April 2014 can I still mail in or get it done online or do I have to go to tax office now.
