Wild Hogs in Texas

We have this problem at the compound but are not unique whatsoever. Got night vision?

The good thing is they are quite tasty on the barbie...lol

Good thing it is open season, no limit on these nasty buggers. They are tasty too ;)

They are tasty, but they are very smart - smarter than deer in my experience. I remember a couple of TV shows which explained the lack of predators and rate of reproduction, they could become very dangerous to the human population, they eat meat too! I would sure hate to have a group of them angry at me, they know how to use those tusks.

They cause a lot of damage at my place in the country. They root the ground so heavily you can barely walk across it afterwards.

They can be awfully mean if provoked.

I've heard that there's a fairly large market for wild boar in Europe, just in case you end up killing more than you want to eat at a time.

We have buyers for live hogs but trapping them is pretty hard. They do a good of avoiding the traps which makes them somewhat difficult to catch live.

get a 4x lighted reticle scope for your rifle. @$185. You'll need a deer feeder with a timer to throw the corn twice for 1 second at dusk and 1 second just after dark. Get a small solar panel, a 12v feeder battery, and a 28LED game light which comes on after dark. You're set and probably for under $300 not including a rifle. That's your choice. I use an old 22Hornet and shoot the pigs right in the back of the head. Usually there's 5or 10 pigs to choose from. Don't buy the expensive/fragile nite vision.

for a cheap trap, get 7 hog panels and about 20 steel t posts. an old steel gate with some screen door springs to pull it closed will act as the trap door or you can just leave the ends of two of the panels turned into the center of the trap like a fish trap. You can bait the trap with deer corn spiked with a little diesel fuel. THey love that. You don't need any of the expensive hog baits as the corn works fine. Make sure there is bait in the trap every nite or just use a cheap deer feeder in case you can't check the bait every nite...I caught two the other nite a 300lb and a 200lb, $228 from the local buyer. If you catch a few smaller pigs, keep them in the trap and they'll draw more pigs in. Make sure to keep a water trough of some kind in the trap if you do keep a bait pig in the mix. The tricky part is to get the pig into some kind of trailer to haul it in to sell. There are many buyers all over Texas. You'll just have to look up the list.
