We Will Always Remember - 09-11-2001

On Friday, September 11th, 2009, an American Flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Each and every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this eighth anniversary of one of our country's worst tragedies. We do this to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, and friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain and suffering caused by the tragic events of that fateful day and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.

In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in an abundance of American flags as citizens all across our great country mourned the incredible losses suffered on September 11, 2001. Americans everywhere stood shoulder-to-shoulder and arm-in-arm against terrorism. Sadly, many of these flags have all but disappeared now. It is time for them to be proudly displayed once again. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds. Let’s cover America once again in the fabric of our flag.

Tell your family members, your friends and your neighbors to fly an American flag on September 11th.

Let everyone know we will always remember!

Thank you for your participation.

God Bless You and God Bless America!

Changes to Texas Booster Seat Law

Effective September 1, 2009, a new law in the State of Texas will require even more children to be strapped into a booster seat when inside a motor vehicle. The new regulation will require children to use a booster seat until they are 8 years old or have reached a height of at least 4 feet 9 inches tall. This is a significant change from the current law which mandates booster seats for children until they are 5 years old or are at least 3 feet tall.

Violators of this new law will be fined $25 for the first offense and as much as $250 for additional offenses of this new law. These fines will take effect in June of 2010.

Endgame

Endgame

By Isaac MacMillen

The Red Queen broke the silence by saying, to the White Queen, “I invite you to Alice's dinner-party this afternoon.”
The White Queen smiled feebly, and said “And I invite you.” “I didn't know I was to have a party after all,” said Alice; “but, if there is to be one, I think I ought to invite the guests.”
“We gave you the opportunity of doing it,” the Red Queen remarked; “but I daresay you've not had many lessons in manners yet.”—Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass, Chapter IX.

The Federal Treasury has reached its endgame. And some of the banks on the losing end didn't even know they were invited to the party.

At the very inception of the economic crisis that has engulfed the nation, the government manufactured an “emergency”—government policies to expand home ownership, coupled with an expansive monetary policy, helped trigger the housing bubble. And then, that bubble popped, causing the banks to run into the government's waiting arms.

Only now they are too late discovering that the government's hold is not easily relaxed. What started as a (seemingly) warm embrace is now turning into a vice-grip of death. An Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal laid out the trap in which the banks are finding themselves, describing how banks are unable to return Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds.

Back in September, one of the nation's top banks was pressured into taking $1 billion in TARP funds. The CEO argued against it. The bank was in good shape, no bad debt, no reason for 'needing' government money, he argued. But he was overruled by the Board of Directors, which was swayed by the government's threat of a public audit, a costly PR negative, even though he was confident the bank would come out clean.

Fast-forward to today. The bank—still anonymous, for fear of repercussions—has been attempting to give the money back to the government—with interest. But the Obama Administration is icily refusing to accept the cash, going so far as to threaten the CEO if he continues attempting to repay.

It was Milton Friedman who stated that “nothing is so permanent as a 'temporary government program.'” The veracity of that statement has been demonstrated throughout the financial crisis. The steps that brought us to this point in time, to this—endgame,' if you will—are as clear as a Dantesque descent into the inferno:

1. First, the manufacture of a crisis. Whether itw as natural (i.e., cyclical) or artificial, it was sold to the American people as absolutely devastating. This was done many times by those in power during last fall's financial meltdown—the people were threatened with a “depression greater than the Great Depression.”

2. Second, a “quick fix” must be introduced. After the fear-inducing claims regarding the crisis were laid out, the “solution” was presented as 'man's last hope.' Once popular opinion was seemingly behind the measure, those in power forced it upon those who they deemed 'needed' the 'help,' regardless of rational minds that objected. This was all to be done hastily—much like the stimulus, upon which the very “survival” of civilization depended, one would think, after the intense, coordinated political assault launched on its behalf.

3. Third, tighten the jaws of death. Once the government had a foot in the door, they refused to remove it, claiming that doing so would result in crisis all over again. To be sure, some smaller banks are being allowed to return their TARP funds. But the big banks are being forced to hold onto the taxpayer funds. And many politicians are no doubt salivating over the opportunities for increased power that exist through the bailout funds.

Already the auto industry is reeling from the tightening grip of government's mailed fist. Last week, President Obama fired GM's CEO. Now, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is pledging to give government “assistance” to banks, and force a “change in management and the board,” if required. Of course, its already too late for those banks that agreed to government oversight via TARP. They are now finding that money from Washington does indeed come with strings—no, make that a noose—attached.

This de facto nationalization—the endgame of all the bailouts and fear mongering—will ineluctably result in the biggest destruction of a nation's economy ever seen in such a short period in history.

And yet the blame does not solely lie at the feet of the federal government; the bankers too played a role in their own demise. The very Federal Reserve whose bailout actions doomed them to live as pawns of the government was at one time viewed as a mechanism by which the banks could influence the government. Then, the tables were turned.

Indeed, a quick look at the New York Federal Reserve—which, under Mr. Geithner, delivered the first of the bailouts to give $29 billion to JP Morgan to purchase Bear Stearns and $85 billion in initial loans to AIG—reveals a large number of banks represented. Of the seven members of the NY Fed's Board of Directors, a disproportionate number are high profile bankers. Stephen Friedman, the retired chairman of Goldman Sachs and present chair of another financial institution, was appointed by the Board of Governors to the Fed's Board of Directors, to “represent the public.” He also currently serves as chairman of the NY Fed.

The three board members elected by “member banks” to represent their interests are bank CEOs. Richard Carrion is “chairman and chief executive officer of Banco Popular de Puerto Rico,” as well as its holding company. Charles Wait is the “president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of The Adirondack Trust Company.” Jamie Dimon is the “chairman of the board and chief executive officer of JPMorgan Chase & Co.”

And Mr. Geithner's replacement, as president of the NY Fed, William Dudley, served for over 20 years at Goldman Sachs, including as its chief US economist for 10 years, and later a “partner and managing director.”

Similarly, the Fed itself was founded by the largest banks of its day nearly 100 years ago. Top associates of financial giants such as J. P. Morgan and William Rockefeller, and institutions such as the National City Bank of NY and First National Bank of NY were among those who met together with Senator Nelson Aldrich in secret to draw up the plans for the Federal Reserve.
No doubt the banks, now chafing under Big Government's rigid lash, hoped that their marriage to the government would enable them to impact economic policy in a way that would be favorable to their own interests. But, unfortunately for the banks, they are learning the hard way that, once the tables are turned and control is given to the federal government, the Leviathan's appetite proves insatiable.

So as the banks complain of the federal government's dictatorial involvement, they must examine themselves in the mirror of history and acknowledge that they are merely reaping what they sowed.

Still and all, the worst may be yet to come. As the chess match between the banks and government reaches its endgame, and the final pieces are held by the Treasury, soon the American people may find themselves receiving their own mandatory “invitations” to the party in the mail—with a massive confiscatory tax bill from a ravenous IRS.

Isaac MacMillen is a Contributing Editor of ALG News Bureau.

ALG CTA: Once again the Treasury painting a catastrophic picture in order to justify excessive regulation and outright seizure of financial institutions. The national dependency on government bailouts must end now! The Administration is enjoying unparalleled power over the overall economy. Help us enlighten the White House by calling the President's Chief of Staff directly at 202-456-6797. Help us in asking the White House to allow banks without the threat of government seizure!

Texas Independence Relay

Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be celebrating Texas Independence Day by working support for my nephew, Mike the Tall, and his fellow teammates (12 in all) on March 7th and 8th during the Texas Independence Relay. I plan to have a good time and hopefully I will see a lot of my fellow Texans out cheering the different groups of runners as they pass through the different towns.

Here is a brief description of the event from the official website:

“The Texas Independence Relay is composed of 40 relay legs of various lengths, totaling over 200 miles. The course starts in Gonzales, TX, where the Texas Revolution began, and it finishes at the San Jacinto Monument, where Texas Independence was won! To tackle this formidable task, your team will be composed of 8 to 12 members (your choice!), and you'll have an exceptional time either furthering good friendships or making new ones! You'll encourage each other along the way while you visit the small towns of Shiner, Moulton, Flatonia, Schulenburg, Weimar, Borden, Columbus, Altair, Eagle Lake, Wallis, Orchard, Simonton, and Fulshear. Then, you'll make your way through the paramount city of Houston, experiencing it in a way you never have before! Racing on a team with your friends in this unique format over an incomparable span of Texas steeped with momentous history all amounts to a GREAT time that you’ll fondly remember for years to come! This all takes place over Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8, 2009. Come and take it… if you have what it takes!”

Allergy Problems in Texas

Approximately 15 to 20 percent of the population in the United States suffers from some form of allergies. You may have allergies or you know someone who does. And, while allergies can be quite a nuisance for most people who suffer from them, they can be completely debilitating for others. Living in the piney woods of East Texas or the Texas Hill Country with its abundance of cedar trees can be a challenge for people with allergies.

Pollens from trees, grasses, and weeds typically cause seasonal allergy symptoms. The East Texas piney woods and the cedar-laden Hill Country are typically high pollen count areas that can be devastating to someone with allergy problems. Although you usually can't avoid these allergens completely, unless you never go outside, you can reduce your exposure to levels that may be tolerable.

1.) Keep windows closed in your home and in your car.

2.) Avoid outdoor activities when pollen counts are very high or it is very windy.

3.) Take a bath or shower or at least change clothes after being outdoors on days with high pollen counts.

4.) Wash your hands and face frequently to get rid of pollen.

5.) Try using a HEPA air cleaner or filter inside your home.

If you’re planning a move to Texas, you might want to check the area first to make sure you won’t be adding additional problems to your situation. Allergy problems can make your life miserable if you move to an area where there is an increased incidence of pollen and other factors that may contribute to your allergies.

Lessons From Ike

Still think you're safe if you live inland and away from the Gulf Coast. You might want to think twice about it! I'm sure there are a lot of people in the Ohio Valley that never dreamed of damages and power outages from a hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast of Texas.

That Guy In Kentucky can tell you about it! Check out his Lessons From Ike.

For those recomending moving away from the Gulf Coast as a means to avoid hurricanes, it won't always work - sometimes the storms find YOU! No matter where you live!

U.S. Mint suspends Buffalo gold coins after depletion

Reuters

http://www.canada.com/topics/news/world/story.html?id=7ef5202a-15d8-4a2e-ae85-4128914674e1

Thursday, September 25, 2008

NEW YORK - The U.S Mint said Thursday it was temporarily suspending sales of American Buffalo 24-karat gold one-ounce bullion coins because strong demand depleted its inventory.
"Demand has exceeded supply for American Buffalo 24-karat gold one-ounce bullion coins, and our inventories have been depleted. We are, therefore, temporarily suspending sales of these coins," the Mint said in a memorandum to authorized American Buffalo dealers.
The Mint also told dealers that it would work to build up its inventory to resume sales shortly.
In mid-August, a shortage of American Eagle one-ounce gold coins due to "unprecedented" demand had also forced the U.S. Mint to temporarily suspend sales of the popular coins.
The Mint said Thursday it would continue to supply the American Eagle 22-karat gold one-ounce and American Eagle silver bullion coins on an allocation basis to coin dealers.
In addition, the half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and 1-10th ounce American Eagle gold coins and American Eagle platinum were also available, the Mint said.
Coin dealers from the United States to Canada have recently reported a surge in buying of bullion coins and other gold products as troubles in the financial markets prompted people to seek a safe haven in precious metals..
On Thursday, the U.S. gold contract for December delivery ended down $13 or 1.5 percent at $882 an ounce on the COMEX division of the NYMEX, while spot gold traded at $873 an ounce.
Bullion hit an all-time high of $1,030.80 an ounce on March 17.

The Near Future?

Is this what we have to look forward to in the near future?

Rat meat in demand as inflation bites
Wed Aug 27, 2008 11:32pm EDT

Cambodian shoppers search through rodent meat at a market northwest of Phnom Penh

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - The price of rat meat has quadrupled in Cambodia this year as inflation has put other meat beyond the reach of poor people, officials said on Wednesday.

With consumer price inflation at 37 percent according to the latest central bank estimate, demand has pushed a kilogram of rat meat up to around 5,000 riel ($1.28) from 1,200 riel last year.

Spicy field rat dishes with garlic thrown in have become particularly popular at a time when beef costs 20,000 riel a kg.

Officials said rats were fleeing to higher ground from flooded areas of the lower Mekong Delta, making it easier for villagers to catch them.

"Many children are happy making some money from selling the animals to the markets, but they keep some for their family," Ly Marong, an agriculture official, said by telephone from the Koh Thom district on the border with Vietnam.

"Not only are our poor eating it, but there is also demand from Vietnamese living on the border with us."

He estimated that Cambodia supplied more than a ton of live rats a day to Vietnam.
Rats are also eaten widely in Thailand, while a state government in eastern India this month encouraged its people to eat rats in an effort to battle soaring food prices and save grain stocks.

Update - Tropical Storm Gustav

Thursday, August 28, 2008

One feature of the official government preps for Gustav that I've already noticed is the tendency for government to get ahead of itself/overreact. New Orleans was preparing to evacuate as of last night, our local university (Lamar U.) is holding its emergency planning meetings as we speak, and our local government here is already abuzz.

This storm has not even entered the Gulf yet. The official weather predictions and forecasts change several times a day. Yesterday (Wednesday), Southeast Texas was the far eastern edge of the 5-day warning cone. Now, they are saying we are more securely in the bullseye. What does all of this mean? The govt. agencies can't risk acting too late or not at all, so they tend to overreact, such as evacuating the Houston area before Rita.

By being wrong on that order, they risk having many residents ignore the next one. I suppose that overdoing it is better than doing nothing. But it does lend itself to crying wolf. Either way, I feel better when I take my own precautions and rely on my judgment.

The cars are gassed up, family has been notified, and if, need be, we leave the area; we know where we are going. And if, like during Rita, our initial evacuation spot turns out to be a bad idea, we have a backup plan, and then a backup backup plan. Even though Gustav will apparently not make landfall until Tuesday Am, wherever it lands, I'll keep a watchful eye on it all weekend.

Ready for whatever.

Thanks for this valuable update!

Special Note:

For many of you out there you may have seen the large number of buses being assembled in San Antonio in case of emergency evacuations becoming necessary. What the news doesn't say is that a number of officers from the SAPD have been assigned to work extra shifts during these preparations for emergency evacuations to handle security.

Breaking News - Are you being shorted at the gas pump!

Well it seems that not only high gas prices are sucking up our dollars, now we have to contend with gasoline outlets that are shorting Texas consumers at the pump. Worse yet is the fact that consumer complaints are up a whopping 500 % over last year. Make sure you check the pump or you won't need to check your wallet.

Here is a couple of brief excerpts from the story:

“Inspectors from the Texas Department of Agriculture found 990 of the 1,704 Sunmart fuel pumps were cheating consumers. At some stations, every single pump was coming up short on gas.”

“But Houston-area residents have even worse news to deal with now: Harris County has more gas stations that have been fined for cheating consumers than any other county in Texas.”
