Being informed is a key part of being prepared. An awareness of what is happening and where it is happening should be a vital part of everyone's plans. You should know different things about the area you live in so that you can be prepared if things stray away from normal patterns. Don't know which aquifer you get your water from? Have no idea what the average rainfall for your area of the state is? These are just a couple of the very important questions you should know the answer to without even thinking about it!
